Mets Superstar Mentioned As Trade Candidate Despite Speculation Saying Otherwise
The New York Mets have a very difficult decision they need to make this offseason.
Will the Mets be able to sign Pete Alonso to a contract extension this offseason? Will they trade him? Will they hold onto him in 2024 without an extension and either trade him ahead of the deadline or let him enter free agency and negotiate then? It's a tricky situation to be in. Alonso has developed into one of the best sluggers in baseball and will be paid like it with his next contract.
There have been a wide range of rumors about Alonso's future already this offseason and it's clear they are showing no signs of slowing down. Although new president of baseball operations David Stearns has stated he expects Alonso to be the team's Opening Day first baseman next season, many still think a trade is possible this offseason, including MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
"Alonso’s status will be a big story throughout the offseason as the Mets decide whether to move the slugger as he approaches his final year before free agency," Feinsand said. "Alonso and the Mets will likely discuss a potential extension, but if the two sides are far apart in those conversations, New York could look to deal Alonso rather than risk losing him for nothing more than a Draft pick next winter."
If the Mets were to trade Alonso this offseason they likely would get a solid return but it would be a clear sign that the club doesn't plan to compete in 2024. New York has the most money in the league and should be able to find common ground on a contract but at this point, anything could happen.
