MLB Insider Links Matt Chapman to New York Mets
The Mets' third baseman of the future appears to be top prospect Brett Baty, who is currently raking in Triple-A Syracuse.
With struggling veteran Eduardo Escobar on the last year of his deal, Baty will seemingly take over the job from him, whether it be this season or next.
However, one MLB insider sees a pending free agent third baseman as a fit in Queens.
The New York Post's Jon Heyman believes the Mets could make a run at Matt Chapman in free agency next winter.
Chapman is off to a blistering start with the Toronto Blue Jays, batting .489 with a 1.2 offensive WAR. He is also known as one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball.
As Heyman points out, the Mets came to an agreement with Carlos Correa in the offseason, who would've played third base. So, the hot corner shouldn't be 100% settled in the Mets' future.
While Chapman could be a possibility for the Mets, who spend the most money out of any team, Baty is still the most likely candidate to take over at the hot corner in New York next season.
