New York Mets Believe They 'Have No Realistic Chance' at Landing This Superstar
They don't like their odds.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports, the New York Mets believe they have no realistic chance of signing two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani in free agency.
Ohtani is set to receive a record contract that could land in the $500 million range, which Steve Cohen and the Mets can afford, but the belief is that the star is reluctant to live in New York.
Nightengale mentioned the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers as teams that will likely be in on Ohtani.
Ohtani underwent Tommy John surgery recently, so he will not be able to pitch until 2025, but he is still one of the most feared hitters in the game. It will also not stop him from drawing a historic deal.
As Nightengale went on to report, the Mets instead have their eyes on Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Yamamoto is projected to land a long-term deal that exceeds $200 million and the Mets need a No. 1 starter to pair with fellow Japanese hurler Kodai Senga.
While the Mets will certainly make a run at Ohtani this winter, they reportedly don't like their chances and have multiple contingency plans.
