InsideTheMets.com will review each of the New York Mets’ Top 30 prospects, as ranked by MLB.com at the end of the 2023 season.

No. 14: RHP Brandon Sproat, Unassigned

Statistics for 2023: Sporat did not pitch professionally in 2023.

Season Transactions: The New York Mets drafted Sproat in the second round of the University of Florida in July.

Season Summary: After the Mets took him in the second round, they opted to not play him during the 2023 minor league season as Florida made a long run in the NCAA playoffs, including a trip to the College World Series.

Path Through the Organization: Sproat has been on MLB radars for a while. He spurned the Rangers coming out of high school in 2019 and signed with the University of Florida. The Mets took him in the third round in 2022, but Sproat opted to pass on signing a deal. His 2023 season with the Gators helped him move up one round in the draft and, oddly enough, it was the Mets that grabbed him again (and they talked before the selection to make sure Sporat would sign). Sproat and the Mets agreed toa $1.474 slot bonus.

What’s next: College pitchers usually come in a bit more polished, but it’s hard to gauge how quickly Sproat will progress. The Mets gave him the summer off from game action after the Gators made a College World Series run. So they’re leaning into his future and a hope that he can build his current four-pitch repertoire into something that could be MLB ready in a couple f years. The good news is that his time in Florida was well spent, as three of those pitches, per MLB.com, are well defined going into 2024.
