New York Mets' Buck Showalter Provides Starling Marte Update
Promising news.
Mets manager Buck Showalter spoke at spring training on Tuesday and provided an update on Starling Marte, who is recovering from offseason core muscle surgery.
"So far, so good," Showalter told reporters. "We haven’t had anything come to our attention that doesn’t make us think he won’t start the season. I know in a perfect world he would have like to play for the Dominican [in the World Baseball Classic]."
Marte missed several weeks in September down the stretch of the season with a fractured middle finger.
While Marte was able to return for the Mets' Wild Card series against the San Diego Padres, he underwent core muscle surgery shortly thereafter during the offseason.
Marte's surgery will keep him from playing for the Dominican team in the World Baseball Classic, but according to Showalter, he should be good to go for the regular season.
In his first season in Queens, Marte was an All-Star and slashed .292/.347/.468 with a .814 OPS, 16 home runs and 63 RBIs in 118 games.
