New York Mets Checked In On Power-Hitting All-Star Slugger
This is the type of impact addition that the New York Mets' lineup needs.
According to MLB insider Robert Murray of Fansided, the Mets checked in on All-Star power-hitting designated hitter Jorge Soler.
However, Murray does not know if they're still involved in the star slugger, but sees him as a fit for the Mets because of their need for a DH.
Soler is coming off an All-Star campaign for the Miami Marlins, where he hit .250/.341/.512 with a .853 OPS, 36 home runs and 75 RBIs.
As a result, he opted out of his contract with Miami to become a free agent and cash in after a big season.
Soler, who will be entering his age-32 season in 2024, would be the power complement to first baseman Pete Alonso and shortstop Francisco Lindor that the Mets have been lacking.
Soler has hit as many as 48 homers in a season, which came with the Kansas City Royals back in 2019. He also helped the Atlanta Braves win the 2021 World Series, taking home World Series MVP.
The only knock against Soler is that although he can play the outfield, he is pretty much limited to just serving as a DH given his defensive struggles throughout his career.
Regardless, the Mets' offense needs another bat, despite president of baseball operations David Stearns saying it wasn't "essential." Soler would certainly make the Mets' lineup a more complete unit if he were to land in Queens.
