Edwin Diaz getting hurt was the start of the unfortunate season that the New York Mets would have. It was a disappointing season in Queens and not having the best closer in baseball certainly didn't help.

As the Mets now look to have a better year in 2024, Diaz will be a big part of that. The right-handed flame thrower had one of the best seasons as a reliever in MLB history during the 2022 campaign.

If he can come back and do that again in 2024, New York is going to find themselves in a better position to win games. While the other talent on the roster lacks compared to 2023, a lockdown closer is truly one of the most important things to have on a roster.

David Adler of MLB.com broke down the FanGraphs' depth charts projections and picked Diaz as a player who had an interesting prediction.

According to FanGraphs, Diaz is predicted to have 35 saves, a 2.78 ERA, 95 strikeouts, and a 36.7% strikeout rate in 64 innings pitched.

While this season for the Mets might not be as exciting as some of the past few, Diaz returning at an elite level can set them up for a great future.

Everyone knows that when the time comes, Steve Cohen will hand players blank checks and walk out of the room, which could be their plan next offseason when some of the expensive contracts come off their books.

Having the best closer in baseball already locked into a deal makes it much easier to build a team when Cohen decides it's time to spend.
