New York Mets Could Bring in Top Executive After Season
It's starting to look more realistic.
According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, New York Mets owner Steve Cohen could potentially sign baseball executive David Stearns to a significant deal to become the team's head of baseball operations.
USA TODAY also reported recently that Stearns is "expected" to become the Mets' president of baseball operations after the season concludes.
Cohen would not touch on these rumors.
“I have never met the person, but why would that matter?” Cohen told The Post. “I’m so focused on the Mets season right now. It’s not something I’m thinking about.”
Cohen is not allowed to reach out to Stearns until after the season. Stearns stepped down from his president of baseball ops job with the Milwaukee Brewers to move into an advising role with the team.
The word is that Stearns may have suffered from burnout in his previous job with Milwaukee. However, he is still expected to once again take a big job as president of baseball ops with a team.
Two off-seasons ago, Cohen tried to interview Stearns for his top job but was blocked by the Brewers owner Mark Attanasio. In the end, the Mets settled on just hiring a general manager, Billy Eppler.
After an 101-win season, the Mets are off to a disappointing 32-36 start to the 2023 seasons despite having the highest payroll of all-time at $377 million.
Eppler and Stearns are said to be friendly with each other, which means it is possible the two could pair up in the Mets' front office.
But Stearns won't come cheap. He was set to make $5.5 million this year before resigning from the top job. He also made $3.5 million in 2022. That said, Cohen has proven that he is willing to spend whatever it takes to win.
