New York Mets DFA Khalil Lee Amid Domestic Violence Allegations
On Monday, the Mets designated outfielder Khalil Lee for assignment after domestic violence allegations emerged against him last week.
Lee is being accused of physical and verbal abuse towards his ex-girlfriend, according to Syracuse.com.
As reported by Syracuse.com, there has been a warrant issued for Lee's arrest by the Syracuse police for criminal obstruction of breath. In addition to the warrant, there was also a lawsuit filed in federal court, which named Lee on allegations of abusing his ex-girlfriend while he was playing for the Triple-A Syracuse Mets last season.
Major League Baseball has also opened up an investigation to look into the accusations against Lee.
“The Mets immediately notified MLB upon becoming aware of the allegations,” the Mets said in a statement, via The New York Post. “We will fully comply with MLB’s policy and cannot comment until the completion of the league’s investigative process.”
Keriwyn Hill, Lee's former girlfriend, claims in the lawsuit that Lee "assaulted her by pulling her hair and choking her during an argument," in May of 2022. This left her with several bruises and marks on her body, per Syracuse.com.
Lee was traded to the Mets by the Kansas City Royals in a three-team deal in February 2021. He appeared in 13 games for the Mets over the past two seasons. Lee has spent much of his time with the Triple-A Syracuse Mets.
Lee cleared waivers and was out righted to Syracuse. However, he has lost his spot on the 40-man roster.
Replacing Lee on the 40-man roster, the Mets claimed right-handed pitcher Sam Coonrad off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies. Coonrad, 30, went 2-2 with a 4.04 ERA and two saves for the Phillies in 42 appearances in 2021.
