New York Mets Expected to Interview top Managerial Candidate
The golden goose.
According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the New York Mets are expected to interview Craig Counsell for their managerial vacancy.
Although Counsell's contract with the Milwaukee Brewers doesn't expire until October 31st, the Mets have received early permission to speak with him, as SNY previously reported.
The Mets recently hired David Stearns, Counsell's old boss in Milwaukee, as their president of baseball operations, so it is a realistic possibility to see these two reunite in Queens.
The question is whether Counsell will leave his home in Wisconsin to come to the east coast, but the expectation is that relocating will not be an issue.
The true factors that will come into play are fit and money. The Mets seem like an ideal fit for Counsell, especially considering their willingness to spend money behind billionaire owner Steve Cohen.
The Mets also have the ability to make Counsell one of, if not the highest paid manager in the game of baseball. Bruce Bochy of the Texas Rangers is believed to be making the highest salary for a manager at $5-6 million per year.
Counsell took over as manager of the Brewers in 2015 and proceeded to go 707-625, while making the postseason in five of the last six seasons.
The Mets fired Buck Showalter at the conclusion of the 2023 season after two campaigns and it appears that Counsell is now their top target to replace him.
