New York Mets Eyeing Zack Britton After Edwin Diaz Injury
With elite closer Edwin Diaz likely done for the season after undergoing surgery to repair his torn patellar tendon in his right knee on Thursday, the Mets could be in the market for another high-leverage reliever.
On Thursday, the Mets were one of teams in attendance for left-hander Zack Britton's simulated game in California.
Even prior to Britton's sim game or Diaz's injury, the Mets were believed to have interest in the veteran hurler, who has vast experience as a late-inning reliever. Now since New York has a need for another high leverage arm, signing Britton makes a lot more sense.
Britton also pitched for Mets manager Buck Showalter in Baltimore, and was one of the skipper's favorite players.
Under Showalter, Britton put together a historic season in 2016, posting a record 0.54 ERA and notching 47 saves.
The Orioles traded Britton to the Yankees at the 2018 trade deadline, where he went on to put up more than solid numbers through 2020. In 2021, Britton dealt with injuries before undergoing Tommy John surgery in September of that year. He returned to make three appearances for the Yankees in 2022.
With Diaz out, Britton makes sense for a bullpen that could use another high-leverage relief arm. The 35-year-old has played for Showalter and has an impressive track record as well.
While Britton is past his prime, the Mets might be able to squeeze some production out of him if he is able to stay healthy.
Britton would also give Showalter another closing option along with David Robertson, Adam Ottavino and Brooks Raley.
