New York Mets Have Shown Interest In Ex-Yankees Superstar Closer
The New York Mets could be bringing a familiar face back to the big apple.
According to SNY insider Andy Martino, the Mets have shown interest in ex-New York Yankees superstar closer Aroldis Chapman.
However, Martino added that Chapman is likely to find a better fit elsewhere.
Chapman's time with the Yankees did not end well, as he failed to show up to a mandatory workout for the postseason, and was left off of the roster as a result.
Chapman somewhat bounced-back in 2023, posting a 3.09 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 61 appearances for the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers. Chapman helped the Rangers win the World Series this past season.
From 2012-2021, the hard-throwing lefty was one of the best closers in the game of baseball. But at 36-years-old, Chapman appears to be past his prime. That being said, he is still a serviceable reliever.
In addition to Chapman, the Mets have also shown interest in Hector Neris and Wandy Peralta. These names seem to be more realistic options for the Mets, as opposed to Chapman.
Martino also reports that the Yankees have interest in Neris and Peralta as well. Peralta has spent the past three seasons in the Bronx, so a reunion would make sense.
