New York Mets Legend Says Team Must Keep Superstar
They can't let him go.
New York Mets legend Keith Hernandez says president of baseball operations David Stearns must sign superstar first baseman Pete Alonso.
“It’s very important,” Hernandez said about giving Alonso a contract extension. “If you look at his record now, he’s got a body of work. He’s not just a comet, a shooting star that’s going to burn out. He is incredible, his power numbers.”
Hernandez spoke on Alonso and the Mets on Thursday at the MLB Flagship Store in Manhattan as Rawlings honored Gold Glove winners of the past and present.
“I’ve always referred to him, almost from the first year, when he hit the 50-plus home runs — he, to me, is the second coming of Harmon Killebrew,” Hernandez said. “[He’s a] big power hitter, and you can’t find those. You got to sign him.”
Alonso's future is in question as he is entering the final year of his deal.
The Mets can either sign him or trade him, but Stearns says he expects Alonso to be the team's Opening Day first baseman.
Alonso's agent Scott Boras also said the first baseman is open to talking about an extension.
Should Alonso be locked up long-term, he could challenge Hernandez as being the best first baseman in Mets history. He could also become the overall best player in franchise history.
