New York Mets Have Made Trade Decision on Scherzer and Verlander
The New York Mets will almost certainly sell at this year's trade deadline. But a total teardown is not in the cards.
Instead, they will likely sell off players that don't fit into their future plans, hope for a rebound, then reload for the 2024 MLB season.
That leaves the question: what does the team do with their co-aces Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander?
For weeks there has been speculation that Scherzer and Verlander could both be on the trade block this season. However, that no longer appears to be the case.
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, both aces will be remaining with the organization this season.
"The New York Mets have no plans to trade co-aces Max Scherzer or Justin Verlander at the trade deadline, and first baseman Pete Alonso isn’t going anywhere," writes Nightengale. "But they will shop outfielders Tommy Pham and Mark Canha, starter Carlos Carrasco and relievers David Robertson and Brooks Raley."
By keeping both aces that gives the Mets a chance to make a rebound, much like the Philadelphia Phillies last season, and try to squeak into a Wild Card spot.
It also gives them the opportunity to give it another shot in 2024 with a reloaded roster.
However, expect players like Canha, Robertson and Raley to be on the move, much like Nightengale said.
This will be on odd trade deadline for the Mets and it's a situation they did not see themselves being in four months ago.
