New York Mets Must Sell at Trade Deadline
It's time.
The New York Mets aren't going anywhere this season, which means It's time to sell at the trade deadline.
Despite having the highest payroll in baseball history, it just hasn't worked out for the Mets this season.
Prior to the team's latest loss on Friday, dropping them to an abysmal record of 42-49, general manager Billy Eppler spoke about the team's plans at the deadline.
“I’ll be open to any opportunity….We’ll look for an avenue to continue to add talent to the organization both short and long term, we have to evaluate it all," Eppler said when asked if the Mets could be both buyers and sellers.
More realistically, the Mets are just going to sell and not add given how far out of a playoff spot they are (eight games back of the final Wild Card spot).
According to rival teams, the Mets are expected to trade closer David Robertson and outfielder Mark Canha. That said, these teams also believe the Mets are going to take the hybrid approach by not selling off much else.
Outfielder Tommy Pham is another piece the Mets could sell since he is having a superb season and is playing on a one-year deal.
Like Eppler said, the Mets want to improve in both the short and long term. They can do so by selling off their productive players on expiring deals.
The bottom line is the Mets have played a losing brand of baseball this season. For that, they need to be sellers at the trade deadline.
