New York Mets Slugger Alonso Returns, Massively Beats Injury Timeline
He's baaaack.
Surprise, surprise. On Sunday, the New York Mets reinstated first baseman Pete Alonso from the injured list and optioned Mark Vientos to Triple-A Syracuse.
This comes as a shock after Alonso was given a 3-4 week timeline on June 9 after suffering a bone bruise and spraining his wrist.
Instead, Alonso was able to return in a total of 11 days from this injury, spending the minimum time on the 10-day IL.
Alonso was plunked on the wrist by a 97 mph fastball from Atlanta Braves right-handed starting pitcher Charlie Morton.
Without Alonso, the Mets' lineup looked overmatched and was missing their only true power threat. During this span, the team went 3-4.
Alonso was having a monstrous season in the power department for the Mets. His 22 home runs are second in baseball and his 49 RBIs rank eighth.
Now that he has returned, the hope is that Alonso's presence can help the Mets turn things around.
After their latest loss on Saturday, the Mets enter play on Sunday with a 33-37 record. New York will take on the St. Louis Cardinals, as they attempt to pull out a series win in the rubber game on Sunday at Citi Field.
