Mets Provide Surprising Clarity on Showalter and Eppler's Futures With Franchise
The New York Mets are severely underperforming this season despite boasting a record-high payroll.
A 31-34 record while sitting three games out of a postseason spot is unacceptable to owner Steve Cohen, the front office, manager Buck Showalter, the players and the fans.
This type of performance is what has led to the firings of general managers and managers across the league for years.
Could the same happen to the Mets?
According to USA Today, New York has zero plans to fire GM Billy Eppler or manager Buck Showalter, at least during the season.
That same column did mention that the Mets do intend on bringing in former Milwaukee Brewers GM David Stearns for a "high-ranking position in the front office."
The writing could be on the wall.
But a shakeup of massive proportions at this stage in the season is risky. Sure, the Philadelphia Phillies did it last season when they fired Joe Girardi and promoted Rob Thomson to manager.
That move spurred a run all the way to the World Series.
But the combination of Eppler and Showalter brought great regular season success to the Mets last season. Moving on from one, or both of them, now doesn't seem to make sense.
Not with the talent on the team and the amount of time left in the season.
Still, Cohen could change his mind at any moment as no amount of money can fix what is currently going on with his franchise.
For now, Eppler and Showalter's jobs are safe.
