It sounds like he will remain with the team - at least for another year.

According to Andy Martino of SNY, the current expectation is that first baseman Pete Alonso will be playing for the New York Mets in 2024.

Alonso, of course, has one more year on his contract and has seen his name come up in trade rumors in recent weeks. This has cranked up speculation about him getting moved in the offseason.

Alas, Martino is reporting that while Mets executives aren't ruling out being "blown away" by a trade offer this winter, they don't plan to actively shop Alonso.

Per Martino, the Mets want to keep Alonso because they want to field a competitive team next season. The plan is to try to negotiate a new deal with him once he reaches free agency, as they did with Brandon Nimmo, Edwin Diaz and Jacob deGrom last year. So it does not sound like the Mets will reach an extension with Alonso this winter.

Will they sign him long-term or not? That should become clearer by this time next year.

Steve Cohen said it himself: “We love Pete as a Met. He's an integral part of the Mets. He's still with us for another year. We hope we work things out.”

Although the Mets talked with other teams about Alonso prior to the deadline, they insist that talks never became serious.

According to a report from The Athletic, the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs were two teams that expressed interest in Alonso.

Regardless, while Alonso could still get traded, It's unlikely to happen. The Mets expect to have their star first baseman on the roster in 2024 before negotiating with him when he hits free agency.
