New York Mets Reportedly Pursuing Yankees Former Star Pitcher
By now, everyone who follows the New York Mets knows what their strategy has been throughout this offseason.
They don't view themselves as contenders, and won't spend like they are one or to become one.
Despite being in the biggest market, the Mets' new president of baseball operations, David Stearns, has not felt the pressure to produce immediate results in his new position.
Instead, he's playing the long game.
One of their most important needs this offseason was to fill out their rotation around Kodai Senga.
Stearns was able to accomplish that by adding veterans Luis Severino and Sean Manaea on short-term contracts.
Now, they reportedly are looking to add another former New York Yankees pitcher, Domingo German.
"The former Yankee is in talks with six teams, a source familiar with German's situation said, including AL East foes the Blue Jays and Orioles. The Mets, too, have talked with German's camp, though the source said the Yankees' crosstown rivals are 'the least favorites,'" writes Mark W. Sanchez of The New York Post.
The talented righty burst onto the scene in 2019 when he recorded 18 wins and four losses with an ERA of 4.03.
However, German's off-field issues began that year as well when he was investigated, and ultimately suspended 81 total games, for violating the league's personal conduct policy on suspicion of domestic violence.
His tenure with the Yankees ended on a sour note last year when he was made inactive for the rest of the 2023 season after voluntarily submitting himself to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse following an incident in their clubhouse.
He finished his six seasons in New York with a 4.41 ERA across 112 appearances and 89 starts, including a perfect game against the Oakland Athletics in June 2023.
Now, German is looking for his next opportunity in the MLB after he completed the required steps of an inpatient treatment program according to Sanchez's source.
The market seems to be heating up for the right-hander as well.
He reportedly has already received two offers and is still continuing to talk with other teams.
