New York Mets Showing Interest In Former Yankees Star Infielder
A familiar face could be returning to the big apple.
According to Mark Sanchez of The New York Post, the New York Mets are showing interest in former Yankees third baseman Gio Urshela.
The Mets' initial plan was to go with what they had internally at the third base position, but it appears things have changed after Ronny Mauricio tore his ACL in winter ball.
Urshela's season ended prematurely in June due to a broken pelvis that did not require surgery. Urshela has since been demonstrating he is healthy once again, as he is playing in the Colombian Winter League.
Urshela is known for his stellar defense at the hot corner and his glove would improve the Mets' infield. He is not as known for his offense, but put up solid numbers in his three seasons with the Yankees, as well as his lone campaign with the Minnesota Twins in 2022.
The Yankees dealt Urshela to the Twins with Gary Sanchez in March of 2022 in the trade that sent Josh Donaldson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the Bronx.
In addition to Urshela, the Mets have also shown interest in third baseman/DH Justin Turner, but Turner, 39, is more of a DH at this stage in his career.
With Mauricio likely out for the season, the Mets have Brett Baty and Mark Viento as internal third base options.
