With first baseman Pete Alonso shelved for the next 3-4 weeks, the New York Mets are adding to their first base depth.

On Monday, the Mets signed Luke Voit to a minor league deal and assigned him to Triple-A Syracuse.

Voit, 32, played in 22 games for the Milwaukee Brewers this season, slashing an anemic .221/.284/.265 with a .549 OPS, no home runs and four RBIs.

The Brewers released Voit from the organization on June 2. Ten days later, the Mets pounced after losing Alonso to a bone bruise and sprained left wrist last week.

Voit began his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, making his MLB debut in 2017. Fast forward to the 2018 trade deadline, where Voit was dealt to the New York Yankees.

Voit proceeded to play for the Yankees from mid-way through the 2018 season through 2021. However, he was replaced by Anthony Rizzo as the everyday first baseman after the 2021 deadline.

But Voit did put together some strong numbers during his time as a Yankee. After joining the team at the 2018 deadline, he went on to slug 14 home runs, drive in 33 RBIs and posted a .333/.405/.689 slash line and 1.094 OPS in 39 games. He also hit 21 homers in 2019 and led baseball with 22 homers during the shortened 2020 season.

The Yankees traded Voit to the San Diego Padres ahead of the 2022 season. And at the deadline, Voit was included in the blockbuster deal that sent Juan Soto and Josh Bell from the Washington Nationals to the Padres.

The Mets are hoping that Voit can re-capture his swing from his days with the Yankees between 2018-2020. For now, the veteran is just being used as first base depth.
