The New York Mets are in need of starting pitching this offseason and they have made their first move to improve in this area.

The Mets are signing former New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino to a one-year, $13 million deal.

ESPN's Jeff Passan and MLB.com's Mark Feinsand were the first to report this news.

Severino had an up-and-down career with the Yankees, which started off strong as he made the All-Star team as their ace in 2017 and 2018.

But beginning in 2019, injuries began to plague the right-hander before undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020. The UCL procedure knocked Severino out for the entire 2020 campaign and the majority of 2021.

In 2022, Severino posted a 3.18 ERA, but was limited to just 19 starts and 102 innings due to injuries once again.

Last season, the righty had another injury filled year and the worst statistical season of his career, posting a 6.65 ERA in 18 starts and 89.1 innings.

For the Mets, this is a cheap, low-risk, high-reward type deal. The team has holes in their rotation and if Severino can bounce-back, their investment would pay dividends. Severino will turn 30-years-old in February.

The Severino deal is the first signing of David Stearns' tenure as president of baseball operations. The Mets are likely not done adding starting pitching, as they still have several spots to fill in their rotation, and need an ace as well.
