New York Mets Star Off Limits at MLB Trade Deadline
The New York Mets will be in full sell mode at this season's MLB trade deadline.
Players like Mark Canha, Tommy Pham and David Robertson are surely on the trade block and will almost certainly be moved.
Both aces in Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer could be moved, and owner Steve Cohen would probably love to find a suitor for them both. Even if it means paying down salary. But teams will be leery of their massive $43.3 million contracts in 2024.
Despite all the talk, one player seems to be off limits in first baseman Pete Alonso.
According to SNY, Alonso is the least likely to be moved and New York likely sees him as off limits at the deadline.
"...“while the biggest haul would come from moving Pete Alonso, the Mets do not plan to engage other clubs about the superstar first baseman. Alonso is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2024 season, and as one league source put it, ‘If they don’t feel like they are going to sign him, the offseason is a better time to talk about trades, because more teams would be involved.'”
The Mets will aim to contend in 2024, especially with Cohen at the helm. Alonso represents the team's best building block as well as a fan-favorite and paragon.
If New York feels inclined to move Alonso, the best course of action would be the offseason as more teams would be likely to engage and the price tag could be even higher as negotiations could play out longer.
While the Mets may look different come Aug. 1, fully expect to see Alonso remain with the club as they go through this metamorphosis.
