New York Mets Star Responds to Tommy Pham's Critical Comments
We can agree to disagree.
It's safe to say that Tommy Pham didn't think the New York Mets' group of position players were the hardest working bunch, and one of his former teammates addressed these comments.
“Ultimately, in this game, results matter,” Brandon Nimmo told Mike Puma of The New York Post. “And I don’t think anybody really cares about how you work. I think all they care about is, ‘What are the results on the field?’ ”
Pham, who was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks at the trade deadline, told The Athletic that he told Francisco Lindor that the Mets had the “least-hardest working group of position players" he had ever been around. Pham added that he respected the work ethics of Lindor, Nimmo and Pete Alonso.
While Nimmo says he has a good relationship with Pham and respects his work ethic, he doesn't feel like lack of hard work has been the Mets' main issue this season.
“If this [game] was based on how hard people work there would probably be a lot more people here,” Nimmo said. “There’s definitely an amount I have done … a lot of guys. But ultimately, you have got to do whatever gets you ready for the season or for the game. And this year, the results didn’t match what we were expecting. Whether we put in a ton of hard work or we didn’t, that can all be speculated.
“Tommy has a very valuable opinion because he has been around the league a long time. He’s seen a lot of different organizations, which a lot of us haven’t, so he definitely has a right to say his opinion on the season. But all I know is whatever you do as far as your work goes, it only matters as far as your results on the field.”
When asked if Pham's comments reflect poorly on him as a manager, Buck Showalter responded:
“Tommy is entitled to his opinion, and what works for one player may not work for another,” Showalter said. “I see the work these guys put in every day.”
