The New York Mets didn’t have a first-round pick, but the Mets came away with 23 players in the 2023 MLB Draft, which ended on Tuesday.

The Mets received a competitive balance round pick between the first and second rounds. They also received a second third-round pick and a pair of compensatory picks after the fourth round.

The Mets sought to add talent to a farm system that is ranked No. 11 in the game by MLB.com.

Parkview (GA) shortstop Colin Houck was the Mets’ first selection, which came in that competitive balance round. After that, the Mets took Florida pitcher Brandon Sproat in the second round, who helped the Gators reach the Men’s College World Series championship against LSU.

The Mets loaded up on pitching, taking 15 pitchers in the draft.

The Mets doubled up on college talent in the third round by taking Oklahoma State’s Nolan McLean, a two-way player, and Nevada pitcher Kade Morris. The Mets followed that up with another pitcher, Charlotte’s Wyatt Hudepohl, in the fourth round.

Shortstop A.J. Ewing out of Springboro High School in Ohio and Missouri pitcher Austin Troesser were the compensatory picks between the fourth and fifth round.

The Mets now have to work to get those players signed with an $8.44 million bonus pool.
