New York Mets Top Prospect Pushing for Call-Up
What more does he have to do?
New York Mets top prospect Ronny Mauricio continues to tear the cover off the ball for Triple-A Syracuse.
After a two home run night on Friday, Mauricio followed that up with a four hit performance with another homer on Saturday night. He also drove in two more runs on Sunday.
In 65 games this season, Mauricio has an eye popping 36 extra-base hits. The Mets could use this type of pop in their lineup.
Overall, Mauricio is having a monstrous season, slashing .325/.368/.546 with a .914 OPS, 11 home runs and 41 RBIs.
At this point, It's time for the Mets to call-up Mauricio to aid their inconsistent offense. The Mets played their best brand of baseball in mid-May when the "baby Mets" combined to jump start the lineup. Why not call-up another baby Met, who is tearing up the minor leagues?
Mauricio, a natural shortstop, has been getting used to playing second base. They have also started to put him in the left field as well.
With Francisco Lindor manning short, the most realistic path for Mauricio to play in the major leagues is at second base. This would force the Mets to play Jeff McNeil in left field.
Mauricio started in left field last night and made a throwing error. He has not looked comfortable at the position so far, which is why second base is likely where he will play if called up soon.
The Mets did not play Mark Vientos much after calling him up in May. They cannot do the same with Mauricio, who has the chance to make a major impact in their lineup.
If Mauricio gets called up, he would likely take Luis Guillorme's roster spot since Vientos was optioned on Sunday.
While it is unknown when the Mets plan on bringing up Mauricio, he has most certainly earned an opportunity at the major league level given the way he has performed in Triple-A this season.
