Top Managerial Candidate Has Spoken With New York Mets
It has happened.
According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, the New York Mets have spoken with Craig Counsell about their managerial vacancy.
Morosi also reported that Counsell is now weighing his options after also interviewing with the Cleveland Guardians. It is possible that he remains with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he has managed since 2015.
Counsell officially becomes a free agent on Wednesday.
The New York Post reported on Monday that Counsell has "serious" interest in the New York Mets opening.
The Mets fired Buck Showalter at the conclusion of the 2023 season after a disappointing 75-win campaign, despite having the highest payroll of all-time.
While it may be difficult to lure Counsell away from his home in Wisconsin, where his daughters are enrolled in high school and his sons play college baseball in the midwest, the skipper and his wife are believed to really like New York.
Counsell and Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns also had a great working relationship in Milwaukee for a number of years.
Counsell is also said to want to set the bar for managerial salaries, and the Mets have the deep pockets to make this happen. Counsell made $3.5 million last season with the Brewers and is due for a significant pay raise.
Counsell appears to be the Mets' top managerial target, he has serious interest in the vacancy, and he has now spoken with the team.
Time will tell if he becomes Showalter's successor in Queens.
