Baltimore Orioles Add Rockies Prospect in Rule 5 Draft

The Baltimore Orioles avoided losing one of their Top 30 prospects in the Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft.

The Baltimore Orioles opted not to select anyone in the Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft on Wednesday at the Winter Meetings in Nashville.

The Orioles also did not lose the one Top 30 prospect they left unprotected in the draft, outfielder Hudson Haskin.

It was the first time since 2005 that the Orioles did not take a player in the Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft, perhaps a nod to the immense amount of young talent on its roster. Only 10 players were selected in the MLB portion and three of them were from the New York Yankees organization.

More than 40 players were selected in the minor league phase, where any player not protected on an MLB or Triple-A roster was eligible for selection.

In the minor league portion the Orioles selected Colorado pitcher Nelvis Ochoa and then lost pitcher Connor Gillispie to the Cleveland Guardians in the second round.

Ochoa is just 20 years old and began playing pro baseball in 2021 in the Dominican Summer League. He did not pitch in 2022 and returned to the DSL in 2023. He has a 9-3 record with a 3.52 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 53.2 innings.

The Orioles selected Gillispie in the ninth round of the 2019 MLB Draft and he reached Double-A Bowie last season, where he went 7-4 with a 3.89 ERA. For his career he is 19-17 with a 4.00 ERA with 311 strikeouts in 313 innings.
