Orioles' Henderson Claims AL Rookie Of The Year Award
Baltimore Orioles third baseman Gunnar Henderson was named the American League Rookie of the Year on Monday, the first of what the Orioles hope are two award winners this week.
O’s manager Brandon Hyde is a finalist for AL Manager of the Year.
Henderson won the award over Cleveland’s Tanner Bibee and Boston’s Triston Casas. Voting was conducted based on regular-season performance.
Henderson is the seventh Orioles player to be named Rookie of the Year, joining Gregg Olson (1989), Cal Ripken Jr. (1982), Eddie Murray (1977), Al Bumbry (1973), Curt Blefary (1965), and Ron Hansen (1960).
Per MLB.com, Henderson earns a $750,000 bonus from the pre-arbitration bonus pool for finishing first.
This is the latest award for Henderson, who played his first full season of Major League Baseball after a small number of games at the end of 2022. Last week, Henderson, along with catcher Adley Rutschman, won Silver Sluggers at their respective positions.
Henderson played in 150 games and slashed .255/.325/.489/.814 with 29 doubles, nine triples, 28 home runs and 82 RBI. He struck out 159 times and walked 56 times. He also stole 10 bases. Baltimore selected Henderson in the second round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Morgan High School in Selma, Ala.
Henderson helped Baltimore to an AL-best 101 wins, won the AL East title and made their first postseason appearance since the AL Wild Card game in 2016.
The Orioles fell to the Texas Rangers, 3-0, in the AL Division Series.
Voting was conducted by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America.
The remaining winners of the rest of the postseason awards will be announced on Tuesday (Manager), Wednesday (Cy Young) and Thursday (MVP)
