Baltimore Orioles Veteran Suffers Hamstring Injury in Spring Training
At this point, the Baltimore Orioles are hoping they can get their team to Opening Day as healthy as possible.
They already will be depleted in their starting rotation because of injuries to Kyle Bradish and John Means.
Both are expected to miss portions of time at the beginning of the year with Bradish's potentially lingering throughout the season.
Now, the Orioles are dealing with another one.
Cedric Mullins exited the Spring Training game on March 4 with a hamstring injury.
This is concerning for the veteran who was on the injured list two separate times with groin strains in 2023. Since becoming an everyday player in 2021, Mullins was an ironman, playing in 159 games during that All-Star year and 156 games in 2022.
Manager Brandon Hyde doesn't seem worried that is anything major.
"He came out with little right hamstring soreness so I think he was doing it really as a precautionary measure. Just felt it a little sore and he did the right thing. I’m glad he did say something and come out of the game," he said according to Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun.
Still, this is frustrating for Mullins who had an incredible start to 2023 before injuries really derailed his season.
There's further evidence that removing him from the game was precautionary since the team doesn't think he needs to undergo an MRI.
Baltimore has now given him a "day to day" designation and will determine when they think he should return to the field.
With a little under a month until Opening Day, if there is nothing seriously wrong then he should be available.
The 29-year-old has proven he should have a place on the roster, so it's not necessarily important for him to be competing in exhibition games, but they still will want him ready to face live pitching when that time comes.
Hopefully this isn't something that lingers and Mullins is able to get back out there soon and prepare for the start of the year.
