Could Baltimore Orioles Pursue Available Mets Pitcher

The Baltimore Orioles should take a look at pursuing a New York Mets reliever who is on the trade block.

The Baltimore Orioles had one of their best seasons in franchise history in 2023. Although that didn't end in a World Series, winning 101 games with the youth on the field was nothing short of impressive.

If there was one area of improvement that Baltimore needs to make, it's adding another pitcher or two during the offseason. It's already been discussed that Baltimore is going to go out and make the necessary move to get a starter or two. However, with the injury to Felix Bautista that's likely going to keep him out for the 2024 season, Baltimore also needs help in the bullpen.

The New York Mets are reportedly shopping right-handed reliever Drew Smith. Mike Puma of the New York Post broke the news.

"The Mets have been talking to teams potentially interested in Drew Smith ahead of tonight's deadline to tender contracts to arbitration eligible players."

2023 was a disappointing season for the 30-year-old. What he did in 2022 could make Baltimore interested in a deal. Smith posted an ERA of 3.33 while striking out 28.3% of hitters he faced. Those numbers were significantly down in the 2023 season.

This could be a good buy-low spot for Baltimore as they look to add cheap relievers that can come in during the middle innings and get them outs. They didn't necessarily struggle much in the bullpen last season with a 3.55 ERA as a team, and the fourth most saves and baseball, but with Felix already out, having another arm ready to go wouldn't be a bad idea.
