MLB Executive Gives Concerning Update About Orioles' Trade Target
The Baltimore Orioles' pursuit for a starting pitcher hasn't gotten any easier as the team is still looking for an ace-caliber arm. Dylan Cease has been the obvious answer throughout the offseason and there's heavy reported interest from the Orioles.
At this point in the trade discussions, the asking price is too high, according to nearly every report. That's caused Baltimore to hold back and not offer what the Chicago White Sox are looking for.
Although the Orioles have the best farm system in baseball, there isn't a reason to overpay. Even if they do end up overpaying, that'd be a better decision around the deadline.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported that a National League executive believes Cease won't be moved.
"I would say Cease doesn't get moved at this point. The White Sox are not budging on price, and teams don't seem to have interest in paying that price."
That seems to be the thought process from many people who are reporting on this. One of the best arms seemingly available might not be moved after all.
There's a good chance that Baltimore's front office will shift their focus to a different arm. While no one has the same stuff as Cease that's left remaining on the market, a second-tier starter could help this rotation.
They haven't replaced Kyle Gibson, who wasn't great last season, but he did throw 192 innings.
With the front office likely not landing the ace before next year begins, that will put pressure on them to make a before the trade deadline if this team comes out and plays to the level that they did in 2023.
