MLB Insider Says Baltimore Orioles Eyeing Star Pitching Additions
With the 2024 season right around the corner, the question regarding the Baltimore Orioles remains the same. As of now, those questions are still in the rotation. An ace-caliber starting pitcher was a clear need for the Orioles and in the first few months of the offseason, they haven't addressed that.
There are arms out there to help Baltimore in the future, but none of them have been on the move yet. Outside of Lucas Giolito, the team hasn't lost out on much who they were interested in. At some point, they'll need to make a move, but for now, they're in a spot to still land that top arm whenever one becomes available.
Of the available names, Dylan Cease continues to be the prized possession.
Cease would be the perfect addition for the Orioles as he fits their timeline and wouldn't be a one-year rental.
According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the team has continued to show interest in Cease.
Morosi also notes that they have interest in Jesus Luzardo and Edward Cabrera of the Miami Marlins.
While Cabrera and Luzardo could be great additions, they wouldn't be the No. 1 in their rotation that Baltimore desperately needs. Perhaps Luzardo can turn into that, and he's shown signs of it, but he hasn't done what an ace has done for most of his career.
In the 2023 season, he posted a 3.58 ERA in 32 starts with 208 strikeouts across 178 2/3 innings pitched. Cabrera finished with a 4.24 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 99 2/3 innings pitched during 2023.
Cease has better stuff than Cabrera and Luzardo, making him the better option.
However, if they don't land Cease, it's not a bad option for the Orioles to make something work for Cabrera or Luzardo.
