Orioles Newly Acquired Pitcher Makes MLB Network's Top 100 List
Newly acquired Baltimore Orioles starter Corbin Burnes is already making lists without throwing a pitch in 2024. Burnes was ranked No. 29 in MLB Network's Top 100 List
Since the trade happened, the former Cy Young award winner seemed likely to get the nod to be the Opening Day starter even before the news of Kyle Bradish having a sprained UCL and starting the season on the Injured List.
Burnes is in the final year of his contract and could be heading to the open market after this season, but Orioles General Manager Mike Elias is going all in this year.
The team has the pieces and a chance to go all the way, and acquiring Burnes makes them even more dangerous.
In each of the last couple of seasons, Burnes' ranking has decreased on this list when he was ranked 24th in 2022 and 27th in 2023.
His numbers haven't been the same since 2021 when he won the NL Cy Young Award after going 11-5 with an earned run average of 2.43.
Burnes was brought to Baltimore in hopes that he would help bring a World Series title to the franchise.
If he does that, he would be worth every asset they gave up, and then some.
It's possible the team could try to lock him up to an extension before the start of free agency, but that rarely happens with a Scott Boras client, and especially the cash-strapped Orioles.
However, with a changing of ownership coming soon, things could look different for the franchise and they might start spending more money.
But, Burnes' first priority is performing well on the mound and helping his new team win.
