The San Diego Padres bookended their home-opening series against the San Francisco Giants with a couple of wins — a promising sign after dropping back-to-back contests on Friday and Saturday.

Part of that promise was a ninth-inning five-run rally for the Padres on Saturday that carried over into a five-run first-inning onslaught on Sunday. Manager Mike Shildt like seeing his team carry the momentum from game-to-game.

“I think the thing that carries over the most is the consistency and the quality of the at-bat,” Shildt said. “If we are always going to compete and take everything that we can and every situation’s a situation, not give anything away, you’re going to keep momentum longer. And that’s how you put together seasons individually and a good team does that, puts together a good season as a team collectively.”

Thus far, the Padres have played to an even 3-3 record two National League West foes opening the season splitting two games with the Los Angeles Dodgers in South Korea and splitting four games with the Giants. They have cumulatively outscored the two rivals 45-41 in their six games.

Up next for the Padres is a three-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals starting Monday night and then a three-game road series in San Francisco beginning Friday.
