Blake Snell Rumors: Yankees Reportedly 'Longshot' to Sign Former Padres Star
Free agent starting pitcher Blake Snell remains on the open market, despite winning the Cy Young Award last season. Snell was dominant for the San Diego Padres, posting an ERA of 2.25 over the course of the year.
Even with Spring Training in the thick of things, Snell remains without a team. It's been a long winter of waiting for him, and no teams have been willing to meet the price to land his services.
One team that has been heavily linked with Snell for most of the offseason has been the New York Yankees. There has been thought that the front office sees an opportunity to pair Snell with Gerritt Cole to create a dynamic one-two punch at the top of the rotation.
However, The New York Post's Jon Heyman has reported that the Yankees are considered a "longshot" to sign Snell. New York has been balking at the high asking price of Snell all winter.
There has been some thought that Snell could land back with the Padres, as it's been reported he is open to a shorter-term deal. However, San Diego may not be willing to shell out the money needed, even on a short-term basis.
Snell would boost the Padres' chances of competing this season, giving them another reliable arm in the starting rotation. For now, he will wait to see if anyone gets desperate, but at some point, his asking price may need to lower.
