Don't Expect Woo Suk Go to Close Games for Padres, Says MLB Network Analysts
The San Diego Padres have been busy fortifying their bullpen this offseason, but they've been quiet pretty much everywhere else. The front office has taken a step back from their normal aggressive spending spree, with the hope of shedding salary.
One of the big signings for them was bringing in Korean right-hander Woo-Suk Go on a two-year contract. The deal is worth $4.5 million, which includes a $3 million mutual option for the 2026 season.
It's a great deal for the Padres and one that could be seen as a steal if Go performs well. He was brought in to help in the bullpen, but they may have to look elsewhere when it comes to save opportunities.
Despite the experience from Go over in Korea, one MLB Network analyst doesn't see him being a closer. Mike Ferrin appeared on MLB Network Radio to give his thoughts on the signing of Go.
“I’m not sure that he’s an end-of-game reliever in the Major Leagues, but certainly seems like he’s a guy that can help a bullpen.”
Even if Go doesn't end up being the closer for the Padres, he can still bring tremendous value as a back-of-the-bullpen piece. Every team needs strong setup guys to help the closer, and Go may be perfect in that role.
The 25-year-old spent the past five seasons as the closer for the LG Twins of the Korean Baseball Organization. He accrued 139 saves and a 2.39 ERA during that time, becoming one of the best in the entire league.
The Padres may elect to have a more open closer role this season, which could give Go a chance. His experience in Korea could help factor into his production time, and the Padres would be thrilled if he were to become a shut-down closer.
He brings value to this team, especially for the price at which they signed him. He should be a solid relief option for San Diego as they navigate the long season.
