Former Padres' Flameout Released by Chicago Cubs
San Diego Padres definitely do not have the most fond memories of Eric Hosmer. He was welcomed to the franchise back in 2018 and the Friars' front office was super excited to bring in what they believed to be a new star.
Hosmer was granted an eight-year, $144 million contract and it looked like he was going to be their first baseman of the future. However, his production immediately dropped once he started suiting up in the brown and gold and even though he had a tight friendship with Manny Machado, the Padres ended up sending him away in a massive deal to Boston in exchange for Jay Groome.
But those struggles have continued once again as his time with the Red Sox was cut short when they released him earlier this year. The Chicago Cubs swooped in on him prior to this season but just about two months in, he has been released once again.
The news was first shared by Taylor McGregor.
Hosmer was slashing .234/.280/.330 in 31 games during his 2023 campaign and with the Red Sox sitting at the bottom of a grueling AL East division, they had some big decisions to make.
The earlier years of Hosmer's career before he joined the Padres were his best as he was among the best two-way players. He won a World Series back in 2015 with the Kansas City Royals and then won the All-Star game MVP in 2016.
I still do think that Hosmer holds a future in the MLB due to his resume of previous success with the Royals and that he'll be brought in on a cheap deal. We wish him the best of luck with his next journey.
