Abraham Almonte's journeyman career has taken him from the Dominican Summer League in 2006, up the minor league ladder, to stops in the major leagues with eight different teams — including two stints with the San Diego Padres.

Now, Almonte's career is detouring south of the border.

According to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel, Almonte is joining the Olmecas de Tabasco of the Mexican League:

Almonte, 34, is a career .233/.300/.371 hitter in parts of 11 major league seasons. He was originally acquired by the Padres in July 2014 in the trade that sent Chris Denorfia to the Seattle Mariners.

Over the next year, Almonte played 63 games with the Padres. San Diego traded him at the 2015 deadline to Cleveland for Marc Rzepczynski.

Almonte re-signed with the Padres in Dec. 2019, and he played seven games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season in San Diego, going 1 for 11.

Almonte spent most of the 2023 season in the minor leagues, but he got into eight games with the New York Mets and went 1 for 15.
