The San Diego Padres chose to retain GM AJ Preller but the Boston Red Sox are one of a few teams searching for someone to fill their open role.

Chaim Bloom was dismissed from his role before the season ended and the AL East franchise is now searching for a new front office leader.

One name that many view as Bloom's replacement is a former Padres pitcher who has ties to the team from his playing days.

"There is a sense within the game that ownership has become more absentee as it pursues other business avenues and also that manager Alex Cora has growing influence on personnel decisions. That has potentially chilled the market, though Cubs assistant general manager Craig Breslow, who was raised in Connecticut and played four years for the Red Sox, is viewed as a potentially strong candidate."

Breslow pitched to a 10-10 record with a 3.60 ERA out of Boston's bullpen from 2012-2015.

His first two seasons fared much better than his final two years at Fenway after he won a World Series with the franchise in 2013 on a 1.81 ERA at his peak.

After his stint with Boston, Breslow's career wound down with Miami, Minnesota and Cleveland before he retired in 2017.

He later joined the Cubs front office in 2019 and currently holds the assistant general manager role for Chicago.

Bloom's tenure was largely criticized thanks to the Mookie Betts trade to the Padres' rival Dodgers and several poor contracts rather than embracing a full rebuild.

Boston might not be an attractive destination from an asset management standpoint but the market and resources they hold have proven fruitful in the recent past.

Should Breslow take the job the former Padre would inherit an interesting situation in one of baseball's most storied franchises.
