Former Padres Reliever Becomes Boston Red Sox New Head of Operations
After multiple people turned down the opportunity to interview for the position, the Boston Red Sox have finally named someone as their new Head of Baseball Operations. It comes in the form of former San Diego Padres pitcher Craig Breslow, and he leaves the Chicago Cubs for this new role.
Breslow has been working as the assistant general manager and senior vice president of pitching for Chicago for the last bit of time, and now he gets his big chance to lead a team. He was huge in helping the Cubs get their pitching back on track, and there is a belief that he can do the same for Boston in a more overseeing role.
The former Padre spent one year with the team back in 2005, where he posted an ERA of 2.20 over 14 games pitched. He only saw 16.1 innings of work that year and was non-tendered after the one year.
He spent most of his playing career with the Boston Red Sox, joining them twice throughout. He bounced around the league in his playing days, which seems to be the life of a relief pitcher.
It’s fitting that he takes over the Red Sox after helping them win the World Series in 2013, and now he gets a chance to do it from the top down. Breslow does have a tall task ahead of him, however, since the Red Sox have missed the postseason four of the last five years.
He has a solid core to work with, but the team does need to improve their pitching and consistency. This is likely why he was hired into the role, and he can show what he can do after plenty of time served in the league.
We wish him the best of luck going forward, except when the Red Sox play the Friars of course!
