There are certain franchises in sports that overthink every decision and don't necessarily want to maximize their cap space. The San Diego Padres have proven to not be one of those teams.

A lot of opposing fanbases like to point towards the Friars and bring them down by saying that their roster is all bought. However, it is important to remember that San Diego is not the biggest of sports cities but still have done a tremendous job of putting together a squad of some of the biggest names in baseball right now.

The Friars have yet to win a World Series in their franchise history and are currently trying to set themselves up for contention for the next decade or more. When you take a quick look at their roster, you see that they have veteran stars in Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts along with younger gems in Fernando Tatis Jr. and Juan Soto set to take over later on.

Early struggles have hit the Padres in 2023, most notably injuries and the downplay of bullpen. Theres's been a ton of backlash from fans but it's still early on in the year. However, the MLB's Doug Glanville is confident they'll make a move if they have to.

"The Padres have all the pieces in that room to win," said Glanville. "Are they going to be able to make the moves they need to make? That's been a yes for the most part. They did the Juan Soto deal so they know the window is now."

San Diego obviously has had their eyes on Shohei Ohtani for a while and he is likely the biggest reason why Juan Soto hasn't gotten an extension.

We'll see how these next weeks of games go for the Friars and how their trade deadline is impacted.
