One-Time World Series MVP Free Agent Linked to Padres as Potential Landing Spot
The San Diego Padres have a lot of roster decisions to make this winter, including how they plan to build a more well-rounded team. They reportedly want to shed some salary as well this year, and it could see them dividing up salaries between a few players rather than all on one star-level guy.
San Diego is now being linked with a former World Series MVP, and the Padres need proven playoff players. MLB insider Jim Bowden of The Athletic listed the Padres as a landing spot for former Miami Marlins slugger Jorge Soler.
“Jorge Soler made his first All-Star team, hitting 36 home runs, reaching base at a 34 percent clip, and logging a 128 OPS+. He ranked in the 94th percentile in xwOBA and xSLG, and in the 91st percentile in Barrel%. His best season was in 2019 when he led the AL with 48 home runs and drove in 117 runs for the Royals. He is expected to opt out of his contract and should be able to land a multi-year deal to be some team’s designated hitter.”
Per Jim Bowden of The Athletic
Soler could make perfect sense for the Padres with the need for a true designated hitter this coming season. He is coming off a great year, and it should allow him to get a nice deal from some team.
With Miami last season, Soler hit .250 with 36 home runs and 75 runs batted in. His bat in the lineup would be an instant upgrade, and San Diego should seriously look into bringing him to town.
The Padres could be that team he signs with, and Soler would fit in well with the clubhouse. He is exactly the type of player that San Diego could easily slot into their lineup to give it an extra ounce of power surrounding their star players.
Especially if the team ends up moving on from star Juan Soto, Soler could help fill the production left over. He likely won’t be too expensive either, so the Padres seem like a great landing spot for him over the next few years.
