On Tuesday, reports surfaced that the Padres and free agent pitcher Michael Wacha were in agreement on a contract for 2023. However, on Tuesday morning when asked about it, manager Bob Melvin had to watch his words a bit as the deal was not yet official.

Speaking with reporters at Peoria Sports Complex, BoMel dodged the question as best he could.

"I can't confirm anything yet, as far as that goes... from afar, (Wacha) looks like, from everything I've heard about him, he's all about team. He's a gamer. Just wants to win so... we'll see where that goes."

Later on in the day, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic shared on the rumored contract, according to sources. It seems that it is, in fact, a multiyear deal that could be worth as much as $24 million over 4 seasons.

The deal is pending a physical and, hopefully, Wacha is able to join the club in Arizona as soon as this weekend.

Over his career, the long-time St. Louis Cardinal owns a 4.05 ERA across 1,153.2 innings. The 31-year-old has bounced around since 2020, suiting up for the Mets, Rays, and Boston last season. He'll likely slot in behind Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, and Blake Snell in the Friar rotation.

Soon enough, Melvin will be able to speak a little more freely about the new addition.
