Despite having a good weekend against the Rangers, the Padres lost their second baseman Ha-Seong Kim in a play at the plate. Kim jammed his right shoulder. Kim left Sunday’s game in the top of the fourth inning.

According to Bob Melvin, Kim is day-to-day and probably won’t play on Monday.

After being moved from shortstop to second base, Kim is having an excellent season both offensively and defensively. He has a .279 batting average with 14 home runs, 39 RBI, and a .821 OPS.

Defensively, Kim has 71 games at second base and committed 3 errors. He also played shortstop and third base.

This season after many national pundits picked the Padres to win the National League Western Division, they have disappointed with a record of 52 wins and 58 losses. They are in fourth place, 8 games behind the Dodgers. They are 5 games out of the National League Wild Card, but they have a bunch of teams in front of them.

Pitching and defense have carried the Padres while their superstars have struggled at the plate. Their ERA is the lowest and their fielding percentage is the second best in the major leagues. Kim’s play is a huge part of these impressive statistics. His reasonably high batting average helped the Padres’ offense which is the seventh lowest in the major leagues.

Losing Kim for any kind of significant time can be disastrous for the Padres who decided not to be sellers at the deadline. Hopefully, Kim’s jammed shoulder heals quickly.
