The Padres made it interesting. You have to at least give them some credit. But with their extra-inning loss on Saturday at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals, their 2023 season just about came to a close.

The Padres' eight-game winning streak came to a screeching halt, and a team that needed to go just about perfect and have tons of teams above them help them in order to make the postseason got a loss they just could not afford. But that's not all.

Saturday's 5-2 loss in 11 innings moved the Padres to an unbelievable 0-12 in extra innings this year, tying the 1969 Expos for the worst mark in MLB history.

The team moved to five games back in the Wild Card race, and with a week to go in the season, their 2023 campaign is all but over.

It would've taken a miracle for San Diego to creep into the Wild Card, and for a couple days, they finally seemed to be playing spirited baseball. But their postseason odds never got above one percent during this late-season winning streak, and at this point, they probably have to start looking ahead to 2024.

The Padres season ending with an extra-inning loss is a perfect representation of how this year has gone. If the Padres lose one more extra-inning bout this season, they'll sit alone atop a list no team wants to be.
