Padres Make Roster Move, Bring Back Former Friars Pitcher Off Waivers
The San Diego Padres have officially made a free agent addition. On Friday, the team announced that they claimed RHP Luis Patiño off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. The addition of Patiño brings the 40-man roster total to 33 players.
Patiño, 24, was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Wednesday. It didn't take long for the Padres to bring him to San Diego – but this isn't his first time here.
Patiño began his career with the Padres, making his debut in San Diego in 2020.
Then, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays as part of the Blake Snell trade, before Tampa shipped him to Chicago in 2023.
Now, after a couple-year hiatus, Patiño is back with San Diego.
In four years, Patiño has a career 5.02 ERA. However, he enjoyed his best success when he joined Chicago at the end of 2023, sporting a 3.57 ERA in 17.2 innings
The Padres currently have a lot of holes on their roster, so Patiño should get a chance to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster.
