Padres Manager Believes SD Has Too Many Guys Trying to Play Hero
When you enter a season with a lot of hype around your name and you don't live up to it right away, it's natural that pressure will sink in. Specifically when you look at the Padres, I believe this was the case with Juan Soto and he started to just try and bomb every fastball that came his way to prove he still had all of his previous talent.
It wasn't until he took a step back and focused on the little things such as hitting in both directions and squaring up to the plate that he started seeing results again. Over his last ten games, he has been excellent with a .351 batting average and 13 hits with two of them being homers and six being RBI's.
However, it needs to be a collective effort and the Padres' hitting as a whole has been very dry following that spark we saw in Mexico City and that first win against the Dodgers about a week ago. San Diego is currently tied as the worst team in the league right now when it comes to scoring at least three runs.
The initial struggles were waved off and excused the first few weeks of the season but I think that these two straight series losses to a Dodgers team that isn't as strong as the one SD beat in the 2022 NLDS has been an eye-opener.
Team manager Bob Melvin has been brutally honest about what he thinks is wrong with the clubhouse right now and he once again let the world know, this time pinpointing too many of his guys trying to get highlights.
“These guys, they’re focused,” Melvin said. “We’re just not getting it done right now. And then maybe you press a little bit, maybe you try too hard with runners in scoring position. A lot is made of it, and guys want to be the guy that has the big at-bat and gets us to break through. We haven’t gotten to that point yet. We haven’t gotten those at-bats yet. So we just have to keep working and keep believing.”
