Amidst the constant chatter around San Diego's failure to live up to lofty preseason expectations based on their expensive roster, starting pitcher Blake Snell has been having the season of his life.

In 19 starts, Snell holds a 2.71 ERA and a WHIP of 1.22. In his last 10 starts, excluding his Jul. 20 appearance which is ongoing at the time of this writing, Snell holds a 0.62 ERA and is heating up at the right time if San Diego is to have a chance at the postseason.

In an MLB.com article highlighting the top Cy Young award candidates in both the National and American Leagues, Snell ranked fourth among the NL contenders.

Snell, who won the award in 2018 with the Tampa Bay Rays, is set to become a free agent after the 2023 season. With the Padres four games below .500 and six games behind in the NL Wild Card race, MLB pundits and fans alike are wondering if San Diego will decide to sell at the trade deadline.

If that is the case, Snell could be a top candidate for a potential trade, as playoff-contending teams would love a chance to add an elite starting pitcher to their roster.

As far as the players go, San Diego is trying to ignore the noise and focus on each game as they fight back toward playoff relevancy.

Snell could win his second Cy Young award if he continues to build on his dominant June and July. With what team he would win it is a whole different question.
