The San Diego Padres are as inconsistent as they come. As of June 26, they sit four games below .500 with a 37-41 record and are coming off an ugly weekend series loss.

The Padres came into the 2023 season with high expectations, as they were among the top World Series favorites, tied with the Atlanta Braves at +900, according to Fox Sports. However, we're halfway through the season, and the Padres have yet to look like a contender.

It's been really disappointing to witness, but unfortunately, we've seen this from the Padres. The 2021 Padres also came into the season with high hopes, and it all crashed and burned toward the back half of the season, as they finished four games under .500 and missed the playoffs.

All things point to a repeat of that, but Padres manager Bob Melvin will do all he can not to let that happen.

“No, that won’t happen,” he said when asked if his team was in danger of losing heart. “That won’t happen. (There) is a lot of baseball left. You go on a run, and you’re right back in it. So it doesn’t look great, there are a lot of teams ahead of us as far as playoff teams at this point. But … a run could get us right back into it quickly. We just haven’t done it. That’s the hardest part at this point.”

The 2021 Padres were possibly the most disappointing team in their team history, and the 2023 team is giving them a run for their money. Melvin wasn't around for that collapse, and he doesn't plan on being around for round two of that act.

However, it's hard to say that won't happen this season. The team is taking one step forward and three steps back through 81 games of the season, and it's been frustrating to watch.

The Padres have a far more talented team this season to avoid another disappointing season. Eventually, they'll be out of games to play, so they must turn their act around ASAP to live up to their expectations.
